There’s a reason to smile for the toothless. Dental implantology, the new discipline in dentistry, has reached Dubai. The first Oral Implantology Research Institute in the Middle East since the year 2000. Perhaps its’ time to kiss your dentures goodbye.
The dental implant is the solution for all removable dentures which produces a lack of confidence in those who use them. What it does is simply offer a promise of the permanent restoration of missing teeth, good as new. Technically, dental implantology is the process of embedding specially manufactured titanium implants directly into the bone of the jaw to support replacement teeth wherein a prosthetic crown will later be added. Meanwhile, the newly founded Implant Dentistry- Study Consortium (IDSC) is the prime mover in encouraging dental implantology in Dubai. The consortium has opened a research institute in Knowledge Village, Dubai and started serving the public needs since March 2000 for its Continuing Education programs for participants from across the Middle East region; since then these courses are continuing until today in a systematic manner.
I believe that dental implantology is the new era in the field of dentistry, said Dr. Souheil Hussaini, the President of the IDSC and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Consortium.

Patients Care & Concerns
IMMEDIATE POST-SURGICAL CARE
Implant patients
For those patients who have received dental implants, the doctor may have advised you not to wear your present denture for 7-10 days. It is important that you not attempt to place the denture until your first postoperative visit.
Medication
It is important that you follow the instructions written on your prescriptions. If unfavorable reactions occur (nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, etc.) discontinue medication and call our office.
Patients who take oral contraceptives (birth control pills) are advised that the antibiotics prescribed for your treatment may inactivate your birth control pill, and render it ineffective. If alternate means of birth control are not practiced, you may have an increased risk of pregnancy while taking antibiotics.
Mouth Care
If you have been given a prescription for Corsodyl mouth rinse, you may find increased staining will occur during its use. These stains will be polished off at your postoperative visits. Do not use this rinse if you have white plastic fillings (composites) as they may permanently discolor. If you have these types of fillings or fillings in your front teeth, please advise us immediately.
Cleaning the mouth
For the remainder of the day of surgery, warm salt water rinses can be used. Brush the top of your tongue that day, but do not attempt to brush any of the teeth involved in the surgery site. The next day, you can brush and floss normally; however, brush only the biting surfaces of the teeth of surgery. If you have been given a prescription for a mouth rinse, remember to use it twice daily. You will be given additional instructions at your postoperative visits.
Bleeding
Slight seeping from the wound edge is to be expected for at least the first 12 hours. If heavy persistent bleeding occurs, call for instructions. For those patients who have had soft tissue grafts, and are wearing a plastic STENT on the roof of the mouth, it is important to keep this in for the first 24 hours. Following this period, the STENT can be removed, cleaned, and replaced as needed.
Swelling
A slight amount of swelling and even discoloration is not unusual following some procedures, and usually disappears within four to five days. If significant swelling and discoloration persists for more than five (5) days, please call the office. Ice packs should be used for 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off for the first 24 hours. Following the first 24 hours, moist warm packs can be used if needed.

Tobacco Use & Endosseous Implant Failures
The health effects of tobacco use can be summarized as following:
- Nicotine exhibit a profound vasoconstrictor effect on blood vessels, causing disrupting the healing processes of hard and soft tissues.
- It increases palatal adhesiveness, which in turn causes thrombotic microvascular occlusion with resulting ischemia, and reduces the proliferation of blood cells, firbroblast and macrophages.
- Carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide decreases the oxygen available, and hence slow healing.
- Smokers have a higher incidence and greater severity of periodontal / peri-implantitis. Though information is limited on implants and smoking.
- Bain and Moy found that 590 implants placed in smokers, 11% failed compared with 4.8% in non-smokers.
- De Bruyn & Collaert found 31% early implant failures in fixtures placed in the maxilla in smokers.
- Tobacco may reduce the capacity of bone to repair during the healing period.
Continued use of tobacco reduces the ability of the bone to repair damage that occurs during clinical use.
- The deleterious effects of smoking can be minimized if smoking stopped for four weeks.
- HA-coated implants have advantage over other in smokers.
- Preoperative antibiotic use reduces failure.
